In the Beginning

In 1952, Leonard Astrup opened a single pharmacy – Astrup Drug - in Austin, MN. Leonard’s sons, Chris and Dan Astrup, joined the firm in the 80’s with the intent of building on the Astrup legacy. What began as a single pharmacy has grown into a regional chain of retail locations, long-term care pharmacies and the Smart-Fill network, a “virtual chain” of independent pharmacies across America.

First 5 Years

Smart-HR grew out of the Astrup family enterprise, led by Erik Lundquist, form Astrup CFO. The concept for Smart-HR builds upon the desire to help small businesses stay competitive, profitable and independent.

With increased competition and regulatory pressures, independents such as Astrup need to find ways to run their business more efficiently. We believe providing businesses with a way to consolidate their employment services, access HR expertise and leverage robust technology can help. As a Human Resources Outsourcing firm, we allow independents to focus on their core business by providing the necessary employer support and resources.

In September 2012, we opened Smart-HR in Rochester, MN to provide your complete employer solution. We help you manage your workforce from recruitment to retirement. We combine people power and an integrated HR information system to deliver a customized solution unique to your business.

Today

Our growth continues from our original home office in Rochester, MN into the Twin Cities marketplace. Opening our second location at the Reserve in Edina, MN in October 2016, we look forward to serving our partners across MN as well as our partners nationwide.

Alex joined the Smart-HR team in 2015 as an IT & Computer Systems Intern. Originally from Rochester, MN, a Century graduate, he is successfully pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Applied Computer Sciences at Winona State University in Winona, MN. Alex focuses his expertise in IT services as well as computer operations management for Smart-HR clients and partners, and is also a certified G Suite Associate - Administrator. As of December, 2016, Alex joined our team permanently, taking on the role of systems administrator. His hobbies include camping, boating, reading and programming.

Prior to joining Smart-HR, Angie worked for 26 years in the field of judicial district administration.  She has an extensive background as an administrator and human resources manager, as well as several years of experience in training and development.

Brad joined the Smart-HR team in 2014. Prior to joining the Smart-HR team Brad worked in retail management and was responsible for cash office operations, logistics, inventory control and pricing coordination in Rochester, MN. Brad holds a B.S degree in Accounting and Finance from Southwest Minnesota State University.

Erik is the president and CEO of Smart-HR and the CFO for Astrup Drug Companies and Smart-Fill Management Group. Erik’s experience in finance, information systems, human resources and sales helps him lead the Smart-HR team to produce a dynamic and effective HR solution for independent business owners. Previously, Erik was a Financial Advisor with Merrill Lynch/Thrivent Financial/Focus Financial Network in Minneapolis, MN for over fourteen years before assuming the position as Merrill Lynch Resident Director in Rochester, MN. Erik lives in Rochester, MN with his wife Susan and their three children.

Jess joined the Smart-HR team in 2012. Prior to joining Smart-HR, she served the Rochester Area Chamber of Commerce (MN) and over 1,400 small businesses as their vice president of education and workforce. Jess's personal mission is to live with intention, integrity and a sense of adventure. She remains active at various levels from board positions to group facilitation in her church and community. Jess holds degrees from Gustavus Adolphus College and Hamline University (MAEd) as well as MBA executive education from the University of Saint Thomas - School of Business.

Joel joined the Smart-HR team in 2015 in the roles of Accounts Receivable, Garnishment Processing, Payroll Lead, Tax Report and Payment Processing, and Tax and Billing Architect. Prior to joining the team, Joel was a Financial Analyst with IBM, a Small Business Entrepreneur, a Recruiter and Retention Expert, and a Financial Portfolio Administrator.   He brings a great background from these roles, eagerness to contribute to Smart-HR’s continued growth and a contagious entrepreneurial spirit.

Julie joins the Smart-HR team with a passion to inspire business managers to feel empowered with the knowledge on how to run their businesses more efficiently. She is an energetic Certified Public Accountant with 20+ years of private small business, governmental and public accounting experience. Julie is customer success driven and extremely focused. She has an accounting degree from the University of Saint Thomas and lives in Rochester with her two sons.

Susan Astrup Lundquist has been with Smart-HR since 2012. She is the daughter of Leonard Astrup, founder of Sterling Drug, sister company to Smart-HR.  Susan is an HR consultant with Smart-HR and brings 22 years of experience in Human Resources and Senior Management at Target Corporation as well as experience in the healthcare field at the University of Minnesota Hospitals.   She lives to make a difference in the lives of others and enjoys focusing on service, leadership and candidate selection.  She is on the Board of Directors for the Alzheimer’s Association, President of the Astrup Family Foundation, on the Community Advisory Board for The Waters of Mayowood and the Personnel Committee at Bethel Lutheran Church.  Susan has a Bachelor’s degree from Gustavus Adolphus College and a Master’s degree from the University of Minnesota.  Susan and her husband have three children and are active in the Rochester, Minnesota community where they reside.

TJ Jahnke joined the Smart-HR team in 2013. Prior to joining the Smart-HR team, TJ had worked for O & B Shoes in Rochester, MN in customer sales and was responsible for inventory control and computer tech trouble shooting. TJ is a 2005 graduate of Augsburg College with a BA in Sales and Marketing.

Valerie joined Smart-HR in 2014 after previously work for a metal service center in Plymouth, MN as the divisional HR Representative. She has extensive background in HR generalist affairs including experience in employee recruitment and retention, HR policies and legal compliance, staff development, conflict resolution and employee relations, performance management, and safety. Valerie is a certified Professional in Human Resource (PHR) and holds a BS in Business Administration with a HR emphasis from the University of Wisconsin - River Falls.
